How many times do we spend a whole day with someone without getting to know them? Conexiones (Connections) is our answer: networking activities for events in which attendees stop being job titles and become people again.

The mechanics are simple. Attendees talk in rotating groups of 3 or 4 people, in short rounds, spread across high tables around the room. On each table there are some face-down cards. When the round starts, the group turns one over and that question sets the conversation: “What decision changed your life?”, “What would you do if you couldn’t fail?”. When the change is called, it’s a new group and a new card.

It is a reinvention of speed networking designed for teams from the same company and for meetings between professionals from different organisations. In just over an hour, every attendee has had real conversations with most of the people in the room.

How our networking activities for events work

  • • 1. Welcome and groups: we explain the activity and split attendees across high tables, in groups of 3 or 4. The pace of the rounds is adjusted to the number of people and the event programme.
  • • 2. A card opens the conversation: the group turns over the round’s card and each person answers with whatever they want to share. Nobody has to answer.
  • • 3. Change of group: the facilitator calls the end of the round and the groups mix. New faces, new card, new conversation.
  • • 4. Close: in just over an hour, every attendee has spoken with most of the people there. If you ask for it, we close with the connections map on screen.

The method: the 36 questions to connect

The questions on the cards build gradually, from curious to personal. They are inspired by Arthur Aron’s 36 questions, the experiment by the psychologist who showed that two strangers can build a real bond in under an hour if they share the right questions in the right order. The New York Times made it popular around the world. We have adapted it to the professional context and tailor the cards to the attendees’ profile and the tone of the event.

Profile identifiers. Before the event, each attendee takes a short AI-assisted test that reflects how they think and connect. The result is a colour, which they wear on their name sticker. The colour becomes the first topic of conversation and allows groups to be formed with complementary profiles.

The connections map. To close, we project a visual mural of the affinities discovered during the session: who matched with whom and on what. A good meeting point for the toast or the group photo.

We ran the latest edition in a small palace in central Madrid, with high tables spread around the rooms. It works just as well in a hotel, an event space or your own office.

How is it different from classic speed networking?
